Encapsulation of butylimidazole in smectite and slow release for enhanced copper corrosion inhibition

Butylimidazole (Bim) a well-known copper corrosion inhibitor was encapsulated in its cationic form, smectite type clay mineral (Sabga (Sg)) by cation exchange of sodium cations located the interlayer space layered mineral. Physicochemical characterization (XRD, FT-IR and TGA) revealed that Bim intercalated (0.48 mmol per gram hybrid material) form. The intercalation followed an increase layer to distance from 11.4 Å 13.9 Å. composite material (Sg-Bim) then applied as concentrated sulphate solution (0.1 M) experiments monitored electrochemically. For given concentration Sg-Bim, potential increased function time. inhibition percentages obtained both current densities (up 80.7%) charge transfer resistance 87.0%) were found with release This confirmed Sg effectively served nanocontainer for encapsulation Bim. Moreover, occurred gradually when organoclay immersed saline solution. Investigations on effect temperature process action released against consisted improving stability Cu2O protecting layer, according physisorption mechanism.
